Reading Opens the World - Literacy Initiative

AFT, State Federations, and local affiliates will be building on and forging new connections between families, communities, educators and schools as partners in students’ literacy. In addition to giving children and young people free books—more than 1,000,000!—we’re providing teachers and school staff with the tools and professional development to translate the science of reading into useable resources to help students read and read well. And we’re giving parents and caregivers fun and research-based tips and tools to support their kids’ reading.

Last Saturday, the NTU participated in one of these events at the Youth Vaccine Clinic at Elm Street Middle School. We gave away almost 500 books. We will be looking for more opportunities in Nashua to distribute books to our students. If you are aware of any events at your school or in the Nashua community, please let me know.

Know Your Contract

Did you know... Leaves for Having a Baby

In the 1970-1972 contract, a teacher was required to inform the Superintendent of Schools, in writing, as soon as she knew she was pregnant and the expected due date. She was mandated to stop teaching and take leave no later than the end of the 5th month. If the teacher had at least three credited years of experience, she could be granted an unpaid leave of absence. If she did not have at least three credited years of service, she was terminated.

In the 1972-1974 contract, language was revised to allow a pregnant teacher to teach beyond five months with the proper medical documentation from her physician. The principal and the teacher determined when the teacher should go on leave based on letters from the physician.

In the 1976-1977 contract, the language about leaves being only for teachers with three or more credited years of service was removed.

In the 1980-1982 contract, all language around maternity leave was removed, and it appears it defaulted to language under sick leave.

In the 1982-1985 contract, language appears under Article 6.9 related to unpaid, extended leaves for the purpose of having a child.

The language remains similar today. A major change occurred in 1993 when the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was signed into law. This gave 12 weeks of protected time for many medically related things, including mothers and fathers having babies.

Wow, I'm shocked. This was a lot closer than I thought. Apparently, we have more singers than suit wearers.
