Know Your Contract

Did you know...

In the 1970-1972 Teachers' Contract, the planning time language only covered elementary teachers who had been employed for at least one year. It wasn't until the 1976-1977 contract that elementary unified arts teachers had guaranteed plan time. In the 1977-1980 contract, specific time for planning was outlined, again only for elementary teachers. Classroom teachers in that contract received 150 minutes of planning time a week by the 1979-1980 school year. Unified arts teachers received 45 minutes of planning time. Formal mention of planning time for secondary teachers didn't show up until the 1980-1982 contract, but there was no specific time allotted or guaranteed time. Specific language for secondary planning was established in the 1982-1985 contract, but was not guaranteed everyday. It was specific time over a 6 or ten day span depending on if you were at the junior or senior high school. It was until the 1989-1990 school year that secondary teachers received one planning period per school day.
