Week of October 26, 2020

Message from the President

We are entering week number seven with students. It definitely has been an adventure for all of us. I wanted to update you on the charitable donations the NTU has made since the start of the school year. All the donations have been approved by the Board of the Directors or the Executive Board, depending on the amount donated. Any donation of $1,000.00 or more requires approval of the Board of Directors. Donations are accounted for in our annual budget. While the budget line has been approved by the Board of Directors, each donation is also approved if it exceeds $1,000.00. To date, we have made four donations to four separate organizations or projects.

All these organizations and projects have a direct impact on our students and their families. The Nashua Teachers' Union is proud to support these organizations.

Under the New Hampshire state law, any person over the age of 18 is a mandated reporter. The Nashua School District has two policies related to mandated reporting in accordance with the New Hampshire RSAs. Right now, most of you are in remote learning. Anything that you hear or see on Zoom or Google Classroom could require you to make a remote. Think about it this way, if you were at school and saw or heard it, would you have reported it? If the answer is yes, then you should report the incident. If the answer is I don't know, you should seek assistance in deciding if you should report it. If you are truly unsure of what to do, you can contact the DCYF Intake line and let them decide if it's reportable. Your administration and school counselors are excellent resources.

Congratulations!

On behalf of the Nashua Teachers' Union, President Adam is please to congratulate Danielle Boutin from Ledge Street Elementary School. On October 23, Danielle was named 2021 New Hampshire Teacher of the Year!

Para Negotiations Update

On October 13th, I sent a certified letter to the Nashua School District and Board of Education related to Para Negotiations. As you recall, Para Negotiations we moving along until COVID hit in March. As we tried to sort out remote learning and the virus, we temporarily stopped negotiations. However, starting in April, I began reaching out to the district to discuss how we would proceed with negotiations and received little response. To date, I have sent 12 separate emails or letters trying to address this with little response in April and June. June was the last time I heard from the district until last week. We are actively working with the district to come up with a date to resume negotiations. This process has been extremely frustrating and completely unfair to all of you. As I have more updates, I will pass them along.

On A Positive Note

A few weeks ago, I shared the Desks for Students project being done by staff from Elm Street Middle School and Sunset Heights Elementary School. Other people around the country are doing similar things and it was highlighted in the America Strong segment on ABC World News last week. The desks being built in Nashua we part of the story. Here is a link to the video.

Halloween Candy Showdown - The Finals

We are done to the final two - Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and M&Ms (all varieties). The vote wasn't close. Reese's beat out Twix with 64.3%. And in the upset, M&Ms beat out Snickers receiving 57% of the vote. This week, we'll determine the NTU Halloween Candy! The winner will be announced next week along with our next Just for Fun: Favorite Thanksgiving Side Dish Showdown!

Have an idea for the Just for Fun section? Send it to Adam (president@nashuatu.org).
