This school year there will be a Presidential Primary. The date has not yet been set because of political things above my pay grade. It is likely to be in late January or early February 2024. This topic came up with the Superintendent because schools are usually closed during primaries. Some have asked why. The biggest reason is that nine schools are polling places and parking becomes a nightmare. Also, the school with the election usually loses their gym or cafeteria for multiple days.
We have a professional development day in February. There is discussion of moving the professional day from Presidents Day to whenever the Presidential Primary will be held. In this scenario, students would not attend on the day of the Presidential Primary and would have school on Presidents Day. If this swap were to happen, no one would lose a workday. All four NTU units work on Presidents Day. By switching, all four units would still work and be whole. This would require a MOU between the NTU and the Board of Education. I did share this with the Board of Directors last week. If we were to pursue this further, I would be in touch with all of you through the Board of Directors. If were were to keep things status quo and have the day off for the Presidential Primary, we would have to add a day to the calendar in June. Also, the Presidential Primary day would be a non-workday meaning hourly employees could not be paid or use time for the day.
As things progress, I will be in touch with the membership.

As people who work for a school district , we are not exempt from being called to Jury Duty. Each contract has specific language regarding court appearances:
Teachers: Article 6:12
Paras: Article 6:6
Secretaries: Article 6:7
Food Service: Article 6:4
While the language is different in each contract , they all share a common theme. If you are summoned to jury duty, you need to go. If you are paid for your services, bring proof of that to the Payroll Office at Central Office, and you will be paid the difference of what you would be paid for a regular day.
For example, if your regular pay is $50 per day, and the Court pays you $10, the district will pay you the additional $40 to make you whole for that day.
The following positions are vacant on the Board of Directors. Vacancies are either a one or two year term (see date next to each position for when the term expires). The Board of Directors meetings monthly to discuss Union related issues, actions, and other business as needed. Board members also help disseminate information from the Union Office, meet with administration for questions about contracts, and assist members with questions, concerns and when meeting with administration. Members of the Board Directors are supported by the Grievance Chairs and the Executive Board. If you have any questions, or are interested in one of the vacant positions, please contact Adam (president@nashuatu.org).
