Here we are again, the week of Thanksgiving. As I reflect back on this year compared to other schools years while I have been President of the NTU, this year has been...interesting...to say the least. While I thought the COVID years would have been the most challenging, I think this year is giving that time period a run for its money. But I would probably be complaining if I was bored. I can firmly say, nothing about this school year has been boring!
The one thing I have enjoyed about this job is that I never know what's going to happen each day. Yes, I have a calendar with scheduled meetings and daily tasks that are associated with the operations of the Union, but I have no idea what kind of emails or phone calls I'm going to receive on a given day. That makes for an exciting. Think about it this way, you work on a great lesson plan, have everything set, you're really excited to do it, and then BOOM! The internet goes down, the fire alarm goes off, the kids aren't engaged, or of course, you're being observed. That kind of sums up a day at the Union Office. I come in - or try to - each morning with a plan of what I need to do, and then all hell breaks loose. Some days, I don't even make it to the office because I'm putting out fires. It definitely is never boring.
So, what does this have to do with anything. Well, I'm going to tell you. This is the week of Thanksgiving, and I often write about being thankful. Surprise! I'm going to do it again. I just rambled on about my work at the Union Office, but I can often do my job because of the people I work with. I mentioned days I don't make it to the office, and I can do that because I know Terry is there to run that place, deal with the phones, update the membership database, and whatever else I may need her to do that day.Â
I also have a team of Officers that work all day, teaching, and that have to put up with me. Lately, Gary and Patty have had to deal with me during the school day, too. You should definitely feel sorry for them. You should also feel bad for Stacy, Patrick, Stephanie, and Michelle, too. But in all seriousness, I get a lot of credit for the work the Union does, but only a small portion of it is me - a lot of it comes from the great team I work with, doing our best to serve the membership.
Let's not forget the Board of Directors either. I have been extremely fortunate over my 7+ years as Union President to have great Board of Directors, and this year is no different. The Board does an excellent job representing the 19 buildings and the members in those buildings. They also come prepared to meetings, ask the questions, and work to represent all of you.Â
And finally, to the membership. There would be no Union without you. I want to thank you for your dedication to our district, your students, your jobs, and to your Union.Â
On behalf of my wife, Sherry, and my five children at Marcoux Manor, I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoy a few days off with your friends and family.Â
Attention teachers considering retirement at the end of this school year!!!
Under Article 4.9A of the contract, in order to be eligible for your severance, you must submit a binding letter of retirement to the Superintendent no later than February 1, 2024.
I would also suggest that you set up an appointment with the New Hampshire Retirement System. In order to receive your severance, you must provide a copy of your first retirement check.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

This was a close one...but waiting until all the leaves have fallen edges out every time they cover the yard. That's me...I try for one and done!
Last night, I had a dream I was a muffler and I woke up exhausted.
I got into a Facebook "fight" with a member over Christmas decorations. I love Christmas and all the lights. My tree has been up since the first week in October and my Christmas lights are up outside since early November. The member tagged me in a post, dedicating the post to me with pictures of all her fall decorations, claiming I had a steadfast love of the autumn.Â
