The Food Service Negotiations team met with the District team on March 20th. It was one of the best first sessions I have been a part of while negotiating contracts. Our team decided to send the entire proposal package to the District ahead of time. They came in prepared with their own proposals, and some of them were very similar, so we were able to agree on a few things. That's a positive start! Due to scheduling conflicts between both sides and April vacation, the next session is not until Tuesday, April 30th. During that time, we will exchange answers to some proposals so the meeting time on the 30th is used productively.Â

Updated Date and Time!!!
As a reminder, in the new Secretaries contract, secretaries started getting paid for their lunch. They went from 7.5 hours per day to 7.75 hours per day. In the final year of the contract, secretaries will be paid 8 hours per day. The accruals, listed as days in the contract (both days and hours for sick time), are converted to hours as they can be used in hourly increments. The accruals were updated for July 1st reflect the days based on 7.5 hours and not 7.75 hours. The district has not agreed to adjust the accruals, thus the grievance.Â

Prior to FMLA and Leaves of Absence under Article 6, it was common for teachers in Nashua we became pregnant to lose their jobs when they left to have their baby. There were no legal protections and no contractual protections. While there was leave of absence language in the contract , none of the language fully protected a teacher until the contract that started September 1, 1974. It was not until 19 years later that federal protections were put into place when FMLA was signed into law in 1993. We're lucky to have the provisions of Article 6 and the protections we have when we're sick, have a family, or for other reasons.
