As I mentioned last week, I have a routine of run of the mill things - my regular work, negotiating contracts, attending meetings with the Superintendent, Executive Board, and Board of Directors, assisting with grievances and school issues, sitting in on meetings related to personnel issues, addressing member concerns, and managing our website and social media. Recently, I have been receiving a lot of questions about things covered in the four NTU contracts. Here are some of those questions:
How many personal days do I get?
Is <fill in the holiday> a paid holiday?
How many sick days do I get?
When is the last day of school?
I am always going to answer your email and help you get the right answer. However, I would ask that you take minute to review your contract before sending the question to me. Three of the four questions have very clear answers in each contract. The other answer is also clear on the district calendar. If the language isn't clear, I am happy to help interpret the language and help you get a clear answer. Some of the articles are not as clear as others. All four contracts and the school calendar are available online. As always, I am happy to answer your questions and help you when and if you need it.
2023-2024 Nashua School District Calendar
I have had a few questions about next year's calendar. I do know there is a draft of the calendar, and the hope is to have it to the full Board of Education by the February 19th Board meeting.
VOUCHER BILLS - ACTION NEEDED!!!
First, is to stop this expansion of school vouchers essentially making it a universal school voucher plan. This is devastating. This could crush municipal and school budgets in addition to the negative impact directly on our schools.
Here is the direct link to the action to write to state representatives:

ELIMINATING CERTIFICATION FOR TEACHERS WORKING LESS THAN 30 HOURS A WEEK - ACTION NEEDED!!!
The other action is to do the one click action to email the House Education Committee and stop HB 1298. This bill is outrageous and will have broad implications for all of our locals.
This bill would allow a person to teach in our schools up to 30 hours per week with no need for licensure, certification or any other NH DOE approval. Just a criminal background check.
Here’s the link for the direct action:
PROHIBITING SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING - ACTION NEEDED!!!
HB 1473 which would prohibit any use of social- emotional learning in public schools with a public hearing on Monday. Social and emotional learning helps students learn how to recognize and regulate their own emotions, find ways to talk through interpersonal conflicts, and develop self-management techniques. The House Education Committee will have a hearing on Monday, February 5th.

Our personal and sick time are very valuable. All four contracts have language about using personal and sick days. The language lists specific reasons when you can take a personal day as well as how much notice you need to give to use one outside of an emergency. It also provides reasons you can use sick time. Please make sure you are following your contract when you are using your personal and sick days. A few people have misused their time, talked and posted about it, and then faced discipline for that misuse. If you have specific questions about using your time, please contact your building representative, an officer, or the Union Office.
The following positions are vacant on the Board of Directors. Vacancies are either a one or two year term (see date next to each position for when the term expires). The Board of Directors meetings monthly to discuss Union related issues, actions, and other business as needed. Board members also help disseminate information from the Union Office, meet with administration for questions about contracts, and assist members with questions, concerns and when meeting with administration. Members of the Board Directors are supported by the Grievance Chairs and the Executive Board. If you have any questions, or are interested in one of the vacant positions, please contact Adam (president@nashuatu.org).
