“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members” ~ Corretta Scott King
The current building known as Mount Pleasant School has stood on Manchester Street since 1924. For nearly a century, its storied halls have housed thousands of Nashua’s students during their elementary education.
But this building, historic as it is, is merely a collection of bricks and mortar; what truly makes Mount Pleasant special is its community, a close-knit collection of children, parents and educators. It is the epitome of a neighborhood school: the majority of its students walk there because their families populate the surrounding streets.
Shuttering the school and dispersing its members would be devastatingly traumatic. It would also create a ripple effect impacting all of Nashua’s schools, with radical shifts in demographics and increased class sizes as anticipated consequences.
A united front of NTU members is a powerful defense against this. There are numerous ways to contribute: sign the change.org petition, join the Facebook group or rally with the community tonight at 5:30 pm at Nashua High North. With your help, we can #savemountpleasant.
At their meeting on March 15th, the Board of Directors approved sending the amended NTU Constitution to the membership for ratification.Â
The changes, seen in red, mainly reflect updating the Constitution to the current practice of the NTU as well as recommended changes from AFT. Some of the changes shift some responsibility to the Office of the President. The rationale for this is because we have have a full time President for the last 20 or so year, which is a change that has not been reflected in the Constitution.Â
To review a draft of the Constitution that will be voted on in April click here.
I will hold a Zoom webinar on Thursday, April 6th at 4:00pm to review the proposed changes and answer any questions. Registration is required. Please visit https://aft.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0D6k4Ft4Ty6ZD0JDIxhrag
After registration is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
Voting to ratify the amendments of the Constitution will take place during the 2023 NTU Spring Election. There will be a ballot question on the proposed changes. Please make sure you register to vote: CLICK HERE TO REGISTER TO VOTE . Voter registration closes on Friday, March 24th at 4:00pm.
